Highway 16 Field Day - June 2004

On June 17 the Highway 16 Crop Testing Unit hosted a tour of the Fort
Fraser variety testing site looking at alfalfa, grass and cereals. Dave Merz
chaired the session and introduced agronomists Jim Tingle who talked about
the promising varieties and Ray Dowbenko of Agrium, who introduced the
fertilizer program for the trials. Dave also introduced Traugott Klein who
manages all five test sites. Audrey and Art Wiens, test site co-operators,
generously provided refreshments on a beautiful sunny day.

On the morning of June 18 the group toured the Smithers test plots
hosted by Leroy and Matt Taylor and at 3:00 pm toured the grass trials at
Decker Lake hosted by Herb Neville.

The Highway 16 trials are actively supported by many farm organizations
and individuals. BCMAFF last tested cereal varieties in this area in 1991.
Cereal silage harvests are expected to start around the end of July with
cereal grain harvest in September. The perennial forage tests are usually
harvested during the last week of June and again in late August. The tests
will be harvested 2004 to 2006.

The Highway 16 Crop Testing Unit operates under the auspices of the BC Forage Council testing grass, alfalfa, cereal silage and cereal grain.  Thank you to the following cooperators and funding sources:
